Bingo, Business Casual & the Pattern You've Been Running Since 2019

Greetings People Leader!

You're subscribed to The Resilience Report — the often funny, occasionally sweary newsletter that will name your specific discomfort pattern before your team does it for you. For 10 days, one email lands in your inbox. Each one builds the case. By day four you'll have taken the assessment. By day ten you'll know exactly which pattern has been running your leadership under pressure — and what's on the other side of naming it.

67% of employees say their manager's stress level directly affects their own ability to concentrate at work. Not their workload. Not their deadlines. Their manager's stress level. — American Psychological Association, Work & Wellbeing Survey, 2023

Your pattern is not a private event. It never was.

The Receipts

Theranos didn't fail because of fraud alone. It failed because nobody in the room could tell Elizabeth Holmes the truth.

This is the extreme version. The everyday version is a team that stopped bringing you their real problems sometime in the last six months and you haven't quite noticed yet.

MOVE YOUR BODY

The language of the body is movement (not thinking).

The fastest way to move stress out of your body is movement. This doesn't mean that you have to go out and run 5 miles. Here are some simple movement tricks that you can complete in 60 seconds to 5 minutes:

  • Jumping Jacks: No, for real. Close your office door and do 10 jumping jacks next to your desk between Zoom calls.
  • Walk Outside: This one is a triple whammy of wellness. Sunshine, fresh air, and movement. It doesn't have to be a long walk. Just going outside for a few minutes can help reset your nervous system.
  • Shaking: Make your hands really loose and SHAKE THEM for 30 seconds or until you feel something shift in your body.

Why This Works:

Stress isn’t just a thought—it’s a full-body experience. When tension builds up, your nervous system primes you for action (fight, flight, or freeze), but in modern life, we rarely actually run away from our overflowing inbox. Movement gives your body a chance to complete the stress cycle, telling your brain, “We handled it, we’re safe.” Even small bursts—jumping, shaking, stepping outside—are enough to break the loop. Think of it as hitting the “reset” button on your body before stress gets stuck.

Try it now, and notice the shift.

Ok, But Actually

"The most transformative and resilient leaders I've worked with have one thing in common: they've excavated their own darkness enough to know it by name. Not to fix it. To use it." — Adam Grant, Think Again, 2021

Your pattern isn't the problem. Running it unconsciously is. The same wiring that creates your shadow is also the reason people follow you.

The Human Solution

Leadership isn’t just a title. It’s a skill. And too often, managers are promoted for their individual contributions—then left to figure out leadership on their own. That’s a recipe for burnout, discomfort, and a whole lot of stress. At The Human Solution, we believe management is a professional skill set in its own right. And if you want to build high-performing teams and create a culture that thrives, your managers need the right tools—not just instincts.

My son starts middle school next week. In May, I offered to buy him a combination lock so he could practice opening it before school started. He looked at me like I'd suggested we spend the summer learning tax law together. 😒 "Nah. I'll figure it out." K. Apparently I had prepared for an anxiety he does not have. Which made me wonder why I was so invested in this locker situation. So I started asking other adults about their middle school lockers and, well... PEOPLE HAVE STORIES. Nightmares....

Hi Reader! Summer has a rhythm and cadence that is all its own. People are navigating kid schedules, vacations, and the straight-up seasonality of “maybe it is okay to slow down a little.” Anyway, we are trying to lean into it over here and allow for a little less structure and a little more weirdness. Take the trip. Try the thing. In Elise & Anna - land, that means lake time with kids, porch sitting with dogs, rowing on the river, and revisiting a past career (ballroom dancing) that was long...

Congratulations, your LLM has become your newest direct report. Think of it like you are now responsible for managing a very booksmart intern. And for those of us who have experience managing interns, you know that it is not as easy as you might think. The integration of AI into workflows has become inevitable. It is no longer a novelty tool that sits alongside work. We need to start thinking of it as part of the operating system of how work gets done. We have crossed the threshold....
